Tanzania needs solar lights!

Some quick facts:

  • 90% of rural households in the Lake Zone of Tanzania (Over 7 million people) have NO electricity.
  • Most of their light comes from Kerosene Lanterns.Kerosene lanterns cause deadly fires every year.
  • They create indoor particulate pollution causing acute respiratory infection, influenza and pneumonia which kill nearly two million children annually.
  • Each kerosene lamp produces over 1 ton of CO2 pollution each year.
  • The high cost of kerosene consumes much of a family's income.
  • Average income is less than $300 per year.

Vision:
We believe in a world where everyone can afford to live and work in a clean, well-lighted environment using modern technology and renewable power.

Mission:
TanzSolar's mission is to reduce poverty and improve the quality of life for people throughout Tanzania through the promotion of affordable technology powered by renewable energy, distributed to communities not served by an electricity grid.

Programs:
The Solar Lighting Program is initially targeting village home systems.  We are also supplying schools, students and teachers through the Schools Program.  The Training and Education Program will train local technicians and provide schools with course materials about solar energy and other renewable energy sources.  The Dispensaries & Clinics Program will design and install power systems for lighting and medical equipment.
